  • LITTLE AND BIG MONTICOLO LAKE

The two Monticolo Lakes - "Montiggler Seen" in German, "Laghi di Monticolo" in Italian - form, together with the Monticolo Forest, a biotope and recreation area in a particularly favorable climate zone. Not far from the Big Monticolo Lake there is a branch that takes you to the idyllic locality of Monticolo on the South Tyrolean Wine Route. In southern direction there is the so-called Spring Valley that leads to the basin of Lake Caldaro.
Most of the Big Monticolo Lake is situated in the forested basin of the Monte di Mezzo mountain. It is approx. 700 m long and 200 to 300 m wide, with a shore line of 2.02 km. The Little Monticolo Lake, however, lies in a smaller hollow north-east of the bigger lake and is semi-circular in shape, with a diameter of 300 m and a shore line of 0.89 km.
Both of the lakes are very popular destinations from spring to late autumn. In summer, at the west end of the Big Monticolo Lake there is the Monticolo Lido, a large public bath which features a hotel, a restaurant, a heated swimming pool at the lakeside and much more. This is the perfect place for those who love sunbathing and swimming! On the vast lawn you can relax while your children enjoy the longest water slide in South Tyrol. In winter, the lakes usually freeze so that you can skate on the ice if the layer of ice is thick enough.
