  • SMERALDO WATERFALLS AND LAKE

Lake Smeraldo is located in Fondo, in the Upper Val di Non, and stretches over a surface of 10 thousand square meters. This artificial lake was introduced into the local Alpine landscape - endowing it with an extra touch of elegance and beauty - when it was created in 1964 by damming the Fondo stream. Today, the lake is pride and joy of the whole community and boasts a small beach where visitors can relax in the sun or refresh themselves in its waters.
Visitors can reach the lake through the footpath from Fondo, which is particularly striking. The Valley Valle dei Molini is very narrow. Known as the Burrone walk, this narrow gorge connects the centre of the town to the lake and features a spectacular ravine carved by the Sass stream complete with concretions, Marmitte dei Giganti and fossils. The path carved into the rock is equipped with comfortable footbridges and is illuminated at night. An ancient wash-house, a Roman bridge and the reconstruction of an old mill can all be admired along the way. A number of comfortable walks also set off from the lake and take visitors to the Doss di Sedruna (20 minutes), Madonna Brusada (20 minutes) and the Botanic Gardens where they can enjoy a wonderful view from its heights (20 minutes).
